So you are interested in becoming a scuba diving instructor? Lets get right into it then, what does a scuba diving instructor do? A scuba instructor is a full time career, usually hourly, who is positioned in either charter, retail, or training departments. Many instructors work at resorts and cruise ships to cater to all of the vacationers that would like to go out on an expedition or to just get certified. The average salary of instructors is around $36,000 per year. Now, this isn’t an incredible amount of money, but for doing your passion and enjoying every minute of every day at work, most would say that is worth it! One thing to keep in mind is that scuba diving instructors stationed on cruise ships and at resorts make less money than those involved in retail. However, don’t forget that many cruise ship and resort jobs actually pay for your room and board so in that sense, you may even be better off! I mean, you get to work on a cruise ship doing something you love, you can’t get better than that.
Becoming a cruise ship captain is both very difficult and prestigious. As a cruise ship captain, you will have more responsibilities than any other mariner. Some of the responsibilities include the safety and well-being of the passengers, the leadership over the mates, captains, and crew, general overview of maintenance and most importantly, the captain pilots the ships avoiding all hazards. Captains are also responsible for keeping up documentation and certifications to avoid fines or breaking various laws.
With all of these responsibilities of safety, control, and management of so many people, cruise ship captains become the highest paid master mariners on the open sea at a staggering $150,000 a year. When compared to the average salary of airline pilots, $122,000, you can see that a cruise-liner captain is a very prestigious and well sought out job.
Many people are reeled in to the allure of working on a cruise ship, but many people don’t realize how tough the work can be. Working on a cruise ship is one of the highest customer service jobs you can take that can last up to two weeks at a time. The job is all about service and it can be very tough to hold a smile and good attitude for so many days at a time. There are different kinds of people in this world and some of those people are just simply not made for this line of work. You need to be really observant, experienced with customer service, and the ability to never get upset at a patron’s demands or rude language. It doesn’t seem all too hard, but when you realize your “shift” is for two weeks straight, then you realize how tough it can be.
However, there are certain tips that I want to provide to you today to help make this job a bit easier. The first thing to do is get a haircut. Seriously. A new haircut will help make you feel sharp/beautiful putting you in a better mood, which translates into better customer service. It is just one of those weird things that work. The principle is simple. When you take your time getting ready for a night out, you feel more confident in yourself and it’s the same effect here.
A second tip is to invest in some good walking shoes. A good pair of shoes will help you last all day on your feet walking around the vessel. Foot aches is one of the most common problems in service staff on a cruise ship for putting the in bad moods, which hurts the customer’s experience. You can find a guide to choosing the best walking shoes here and just choose one you like the look of and a color that matches your recommended attire. If you don’t like any of those, you can find more fashionable walking shoes under the best walking shoes for women. Once you have a new pair of shoes, your chances of fatigue and the possibility of getting in a bad mood significantly decreases leading you to doing a better job.
The last tip is to drink a lot of water. It’s hard to stay hydrated when you’re focusing on your work so much. It is fairly common for workers on a cruise ship to carry around a water bottle using a carabiner to attach it to your belt. That way, you will always have a bottle of water on you. It is important to drink at least 5 bottles of water a day when working so hard. This will keep your body hydrated, your head clear, and give you more energy throughout the day.
Using all of these three tips together will give you a significant advantage to working on a cruise ship. It is tough work that should not be taken lightly. The better prepared for the job you are, the longer you will be able to work and enjoy the traveling and scenery that comes with working on a cruise ship.

It had been six months since I started training to get a job as swim instructor at the large community pool. I trained for it very hard in hopes that I could land this job and make it a stepping stone for a much bigger and higher paying career down the road. I swam every single day making sure I could swim for a very long time and also I practiced holding my breathe longer and longer each time. Then I also did it in much colder waters where it is way harder to hold your breath for a long period of time. The road was tough to get there, but I finally made it. I passed the interview, I passed the test, and I said “yes!” to the job offer. Finally, my career in the water was about go begin!
I woke up at 5:00 AM for my first day and went for a short run to get my body and brain moving. I was thinking and preparing for my first day hoping I would make a great first impression on the staff there. Although no one took this job seriously there, I was going to. I was going to show up determined from day one to day 356 without a hiccup in my hard work. I wasn’t there for a summer job, I was there for a career so I had to stand out, get noticed, and be acknowledged by the supervisors. I arrived 10 minutes early to the pool at 5:50 AM ready to start the day and just picked up a quick McDonalds breakfast with coffee along the way.
I met my supervisor and began my first duties, which were getting read for the pool grounds to open at 7:00 AM. I did everything quickly and efficiently accomplishing all my tasks 40 minutes early. They said there was nothing else to do until the pool opened, so they just showed me how things worked around the grounds, which was okay. It was a few minutes until 7:00 and I washed my supervisor where I could go to use the bathroom. I think the coffee and McGriddle I ate was affecting my stomach. To my luck, the bathrooms were out of order. They broke yesterday I suppose and a team was coming out to fix them later in the week so I just had to hold it in for now.
The morning was going smoothly. i was in the lifeguard chair keeping a keen eye on everyone. There was some kids in the pool splashing vigorously and I told them to keep it down, but they didn’t hear me. I got out of my chair and swam over to them and asked them if they could keep it down. After getting up, I realized I had to pass some gas, so I let it out while in the water next to the kids. I thought I was being sneaky and could blame it on the kids. To my absolute horror, I had accidentally pooped!! There was no hiding it as the water was turning brown all around me. I tried to blame it on the kid who near me but he was screaming “no, you did it!” I think my red face gave it away…
The pool had to closed down for two hours while they cleaned it and I was scolded by my managers. It was horrible. During down time, it then became my job to call a porta potty company to bring over a couple of units until our bathroom was fixed. I found a website that listed a ton of companies with porta potty rentals and called them for our porta potty rental. I was so embarrassed that I almost cried, but it was a good learning experience. I just kept telling myself that it will be a funny story to tell after a year or 20… What was your most embarrassing story?
If you are a true watermen you are always looking for a new way to explore the ocean. One way to re-exam the great blue is spearfishing. If you are new to the sport, it is combating of free diving and fishing. For those that are looking to learn more about the sport, remember to check out the site Just Spear Fishing. Anyway, let’s get on with this blog post.
Here is why you’ll LOVE this sport:
Similar to snorkeling, free diving is truly a skillet you cannot master in one day and takes year of practice to get good at. One of the challenges is simply holding your breath for extended periods of time. Skilled free divers can hold their breath for 5 to 10 minutes in a single session.
Compared to scuba diving, free diving is more challenging and in my opinion, being that it is more difficult, it makes it more gratifying. Scuba diving is like a walk in the park, you descend to the bottom of the ocean, carefully try not to exert yourself (because you will use up too much air and spend less time on the bottom of the ocean,) and just watch the fish.
Don’t get me wrong, scuba diving is a lot of fun, but frankly you are not going to get into great shape from that alone. If you are more of a physical person, freediving might before you.
So what is the deal with spear fishing?
Spear fishing is a combination of free diving and sport fishing. Although many will still simply carry a spear gun with them while scuba diving, typically it performed without any tanks or related gear.
While spear fishing, you are transformed from a simple free diver to an underwater hunter. It is truly an amazing feeling and you are developing mutable skillets and battling many challenges.
Let’s do a quick breakdown of the types skills you will need to develop:
- Physically be in shape to dive to great depths (don’t worry this one comes with practice.)
- You have to be able to hold your breath long enough (Something you develop over time.)
- Track down game
- Fire accurately
- If you into eating the fish that you personally catch, it is a lot of fun, and will get you into great shape.
What types of gear will you need?
Similar to freediving and scuba diving, you will need a mask and snorkel, possible a wetsuit, and will definitely need a Speargun. If you have any plans of becoming a true Spearo, you’ll have to master how to use this weapon. The gun comes in a number of different price ranges. Typically they start around $150 and can go up to $2,000 depending on your needs and skill level.
If you decide to take up this sport and are searching for spearguns for sale remember JustSpearfishing.com for all your underwater hunting needs.

Marketing is vital for finding new customers and giving your aquatic business to expand. Can marketing be both efficient and inexpensive? There are several possibilities that you can start making use of today.
Get a Coach
If marketing and advertising is not your strong point, get a coach. Seriously, for a few hundred dollars per month you can have an expert teach you what to do. If you owned a deep sea diving business, would you train and coach your customers on how to dive safely and effectively before heading out to sea? Absolutely, so why not apply the same principles for your own business by engaging a business coach?
Use Social Networks
Social networking is probably the cheapest marketing channel for small businesses that guarantees amazing targeting possibilities.
You should have active profiles in as many social networks, as possible. Coming up with a social media marketing strategy in advance will allow you to focus the efforts and to make the most of each channel.
Facebook is perfect for reaching new prospects. LinkedIn gives you possibilities for finding business partners. Adding video clips to YouTube can help your marketing campaign go viral.
The unique landscape of aquatic environments presents a perfect opportunity for use of eye-catching imagery so take advantage of that!
Write Articles for Local Publications
Contact local publications, especially specialized magazines that discuss topics related to your industry. Offer to contribute with useful pieces of content in exchange for having your brand mentioned in the publication.
Contributing to newspapers and magazines can help you build your reputation inside the industry. People like to receive useful information rather than openly commercial messages. The next time these magazine readers need a product or a service in the niche, they will think about your company.
Write an eBook
Write a useful, relevant ebook and distribute it for free. Your aim is going to be popularity rather than revenue-generation.
Writing an ebook is a strategy similar to contributing to local publications. It, however, lets you reach a larger audience. Think about the questions that people have about your industry and discuss such topics. Make the ebook available for download through your website and through online marketplaces.
Make it Easy for Customers to Contact You
One thing that is very worthwhile investing in once your business is up and running, is a toll free number, or 1300 number if you are viewing this from Australia! If a potential customer is viewing your website or looking through a hard-copy piece of advertising material, the last thing you want is to have multiple phone numbers for them to cycle through. Make the customer’s life easy by having one central number and you will almost certainly see an increase in the number of sales inquiries.
Participate in Seminars and Workshops
Being a lecturer during a specialized seminar or organizing some kind of workshop will also help you increase the popularity of your small business.
Sharing your know-how with the world will help you build relationships with your potential clientele. It will also give your brand bigger exposure. Even if participation in such events does not result in a direct increase in revenue, it will help for increasing brand recognition.
These tips should give you a start. Be sure to take a look around online for other experts in the business marketing field for more tips and advice.
Used or new, renting a sea container can seem like a very ambiguous process. How much does it cost? Where can I find the right company? Who will deliver the containers? Are multiple deliveries included in the service? Can I store my container off-site? The list goes on and on. Hiring a sea container, whether for actual commercial use or for storage, is quite a simple process. Usually, you get in touch with a local company directly, arrange for the size and delivery of your container and then sit back and wait for it to arrive. If you’re intending to use the containers for industrial shipping, it’s slightly more complex. This article is going to explore some of the options available to those who want to use the containers for storage. If you’re responsible for managing retired containers, you might also find this article helpful. By far and away the best comparison company that we’ve come across is Sea Container HQ and we recommend using them to find a good deal.
There are numerous types of shipping container and they can include anything from corrugated boxes to steel drums used for transporting liquids. Usually, when hiring containers for storage, the term is most commonly used to refer to an intermodal freight container. These are large steel boxes that are used by freight companies to transport cargo by boat without having to offload the actual cargo itself. They can very easily be transferred to trains or trucks for specific transportation. Because they are built for durability they can withstand significant amounts of wear and tear. This is why they are often used for less-intensive storage purposes after they have been retired. It is these used containers that you will be looking to rent or buy for your on-land storage uses. If you are looking to buy containers for shipping then you will most likely need new or fully certified used ones. These are generally more expensive.
The containers come in a variety of sizes and styles. All containers will invariably be fully airtight and waterproof. The locking bar system that they utilize means that they will be fully secure and protected against theft. If you need a good flow of circulation in your container you can also buy them with air vents. The most common containers come in three sizes: 10, 20 and 40 feet. 10ft containers are best for most small-scale storage needs whilst 40ft are suitable for industrial use.
When deciding on which company to use, remember to make sure that full delivery and pick-up on termination of use is included. Most companies will deliver to anywhere in the country but you can often save money by choosing a local company. There are also usually permits required if you mean to keep the container for an extended period, even if it is on private property. Containers will be delivered by truck so make sure that you have the necessary space cleared for delivery. Several companies also offer an off-site storage option too, which can be beneficial if you’re on the move a lot.
On this site, we love to explore adventurous and exciting career paths on the open water. But what if you want to blend a little bit of security with these two things. This short article explores some of the careers that, whilst requiring extensive training that place them in high demand, are a little out of the ordinary in the sense that they can take you to new places and offer you new and unusual experiences. All of these options are serious choices and shouldn’t be undertaken lightly. That said, if you do go all the way with one of these jobs, you’re almost certain to have a working life that’s filled with adrenaline and challenge.
Scuba Diver: Scuba diving is an obvious choice for people who want a transferable skill that they can take with them all over the world. Because companies operate mostly in tourist locations around the world, they’re excellent for people who want to do a lot of travelling. Companies are also always usually looking to take people on, due to the transitory nature of the industry. Qualifications are also easy to come by.
Rescue Swimmer: This is a hard, mentally challenging and physically demanding job. It’s also possibly the most rewarding one in this list. It requires extensive training and a lot of dedication but it’s also one of the most secure and truly adventurous jobs available.
Plumber: Whilst this one might not sound too adventurous, don’t disregard it just yet. As a plumber you’ll have a set of highly-valuable and transferable skills that you can take with you anywhere in the world. If you’re considering a career on a cruise ship or ocean liner, plumbers are in very high demand. Check out this site, ProvenPlumbers.com, to learn about some of the different companies in the industry. Many offer their own apprenticeships and internal teaching programmes. You can also search for Los Angeles plumbers and San Diego plumbers if you live in the area. Remember, becoming a plumber is a very secure job that can also have the potential for a lot of travel and adventure if you pick the right career path within the industry.
Fisherman: Again, this job doesn’t seem particularly glamorous at first. But, much like a plumber, it’s not all what it seems. One of the biggest draws to being a fisherman, apart from a life on the open ocean, is the fact that more often than not you will be self-employed. You will own or hire your own fishing boat, along with all the equipment, and sell your products on the open market, rather than to a specific corporation. Once you have the necessary skills, you can work from nearly anywhere in the world.
Tour Guide: If you have a passion for the outdoors, enjoy talking to people and know a particular area very well, then you might be able to get a job as an outdoor tour guide. There are several companies that offer these kind of services and good people are in short supply. It’s not as secure as some of the other options but still offers an unusual and rewarding job experience.
On this website, we mostly discuss different types of jobs and careers that are in someway associated with the water, be it on lakes or the ocean; however, today I wanted to write about a different type of job that may not necessarily be associate with those things because it is in the rescue and emergency field. Additionally, it is a great “stepping stone job” for many different careers that are usually discussed on this website.
What is this job?
It is a Emergency Medical Technician, or an EMT for short. An EMT is someone who administers first response care and diagnoses in emergency situations. They typically ride with ambulances, but can also be stationed in helicopters for far or hard to reach locations, such as in the wilderness or somewhere in the ocean. An EMT is a highly sought after job, because it is often a required experience for many higher levels of emergency response careers which include some of the careers we talk about on this website.
The average EMT salary is $30,360 per year or $14.60 per hour according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest paid EMTs reside in Alaska and Hawaii. The demand for EMTs has an estimated growth of 33% in the next ten years. Our ever-increasing population causes this huge growth estimation. More people equal more emergencies and more people in need of care.
I asked one of our readers Ryan Sheffield from Cleveland, Ohio what drove him to become an EMT and he had to say the following. “One day when I was 10 years old, my mom and I were watching morning cartoons while I was eating cereal. My told me that she was feeling kind of dizzy and I remember her holding her chest as she was groaning. She yelled for my dad to come over and as soon as he saw her, he called 911. Within minutes, a police officer came to the door and a few seconds later an ambulance came, too. My dad told me she was sick and the doctors were here to help her. I saw an EMT come from the ambulance and quickly came to the diagnoses that my mom was having a stroke. He gave her shot and strapped her up their bed. He told my dad and I that we were lucky he was able to give her this shot in time or she would have died. That man saved my mom’s life and I thought he was a hero. It was from the day on that I had a dream of becoming an EMT. So when I was 19, I did it.”
It was from Ryan’s story that inspired me to write this article today, especially since EMTs are so relative to the careers on this website. If you haven’t looked into becoming an EMT before, I highly recommend it be considered as a stepping-stone to your career choice. It can give you valuable experience that you can take with you for the rest of your career.
